In my practice, I bought an electronic FHR monitor (not for labor) that came with a few bells and whistles, like a button for the mother to press when her baby moved. I had an instant NST machine. If the results were questionable, I referred the mother to an OB.

Not everyone has an electronic FHR monitor at their disposal, nor would they necessarily want one. Before life in the electronic world, I used an auscultated acceleration test to monitor the baby, as warranted. It is easy to perform, especially with two people. The FHR movement box on the chart is an additional feature that moms appreciate.
