What Are the Different Graphic Files?

JPG: JPG (or JPEG), which can be reduced in size, is often used for photographs on the web,  web banners, Facebook posts, and email graphics. JPGs are also great for printing high resolution photographs or artwork.

    • 72 dpi: Web
    • 300 dpi: High resolution printing

PNG: PNG is perfect for high-quality transparent backgrounds on websites, which can be placed over a colored background. You do not want to use PNG files for a printing project.

    • Web use only

PDF: PDF files are often the file format requested by printers for printing high quality documents and graphics. It’s great for posters, booklets, handouts, flyers or displaying documents on the web. PDFs cannot be easily edited.

EPS: Very large files for printing high quality posters and illustrations which can be scaled to any size. EPS requires specialized software for editing.

What is a ZIP File and How Do I Open It?

A ZIP file is simply several files that are compressed into one file, making them faster to download. This is especially helpful for large, illustrated graphics.

How to open a ZIP file:

      • Double click
      • Right-click and select “Extract All” or “Open”

What Printing Company Should I Use?

Depending on who you use, the cost of printing through a service can vary.

Local Large Box Printing Company: Companies such as FedEx Kinkos, Office Depot, or other large-box company offer on-line and walk-in options for ordering your items, which is very convenient. They also have great hours and are open on the weekends.

Locally Owned Printing Company: A locally owned printing company offers walk-in options for ordering your items and may have on-line ordering services as well.  There are a lot of advantages using a locally owned print shop. They have samples you can view, it eliminates the cost of shipping, and it is much easier working with a graphic designer when you can talk to them face-to-face.

Online Printing Companies: Using an on-line printing company is often a great way to reduce cost, especially if you have bulk orders. It is very easy to upload a file and have it shipped to you, but you may have to pay shipping costs. I often used online printing companies to order paper charts for my midwifery practice, which was a fraction of the cost of any local printing company. Companies I have used:

      • SmartPress: Banners, booklets
      • GotPrint: Bulk paperwork, business cards
